How to Find a Potential Partner

We find people lower the bar for their co-founders in a way that they wouldn’t for somebody they hire, largely because of the limited options. At Entrepreneur First, we solved this problem by bringing together carefully screened groups of potential founders to create optionality. Outside of EF, you’re much more likely to have a less diverse and smaller network of potential co-founders, most of whom are very similar to you. That homogeneity constrains the ideas that you can end up working on. If you don’t have a specific edge, building certain ideas will be very difficult. Because of this lack of available alternatives, the average new founder compromises and ends up co-founding with somebody who isn’t – or doesn’t have the opportunity to be – a world-class version of a CEO or CTO. As you go through the co-founder search process, you need to ask yourself, ‘Is this the best possible co-founder I can find, or is this the most convenient co-founder I can find?’

The first step to finding a co-founder is understanding yourself as discussed in the previous chapters. By digging into your Edges, stack ranking them and looking at the unique intersections, you are preparing yourself for effective co-founder conversations.

Next, you need to understand your options – those that already exist and those that you need to manufacture. You are looking to unearth an exceptional co-founder. This will take time and conscious, strategic effort. It’s the most important decision you will make when founding your startup – and one that is consistently undervalued by first-time founders. There are two ways to think about your available network of co-founders: those who are currently in your network and those who could be in the future.
